ATC Love to Chef John Somerville

Chef John Somerville made a risky move by making a dessert as the first dish he would prepare for the Top Chef judges and it did not pay off. Since the challenge was to create a dish that would reflect where he was from, Chef John chose to focus on the maple which flows through the trees in Michigan. His Maple Mousse Napoleon with Crisp Macadamia Nut and Vanilla Sauce was not a hit, however. Tom Colicchio said that he couldn't taste the maple while others commented on how soggy the pastry was. In retrospect, Chef John felt that he should have made his pastry from scratch, but chose to use store-bought pastry to save money for the other ingredients. While the gamble did not work, we wish him well in his future endeavors.

This post is only for positive comments about Chef John Somerville. If you have anything negative to say about him or any of his competition, please leave a comment here.

Hello,
Thank you for letting me voice a few thoughts about Chef John Somerville whose middle name should be "joie de vivre" because he is just that: a lover of life.

John is a beautiful person inside and out. His joy exudes. The thrill he expressed at a seeing a mink outside our window to viewing the island of Maui from a helicopter are so memorable and made my experiences that much more.

He wants/hopes/prays for the best in all the people he meets.

He truly is one of a kind, and I can only hope that his joy continues to be effectious, bring smiles to those around him.

Thank you.

The idea of his dessert sounds divine! Perhaps he just got a case of nerves - it's too bad we won't get to know him better on this season.

I was so sad to see John go! We always pick a contestant to root for right from the start, and my husband and I picked John because he seemed fun, smart and unpretentious. ...then I read his bio and found out he's a former engineer! (So is my hubby.) No wonder we thought he was cool! Best wishes, John! I wish we got to see more of what you can do!

I was so sad to see Chef John go so early in the game. I interned for him at the Lark a few years ago, and know he is a wonderful chef/person/tutor/friend! I learned so much from him while I was working for him, and only wish I could have worked for him longer! Maybe he'll get a second chance on a reunion show! :)
