TC News & Information 7.10.2012

First, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that everyone's favorite Top Chef Texas competitor, Beverly Kim, is leaving Aria and headed to Bonsoiree...
...and then there's speculation that season 6's Jennifer Carroll is looking to open her restaurant, Concrete Blonde, in New York, rather than Philly.
Richard Blais, still pretty firmly entrenched in Atlanta, competed against Hector Santiago recently on the Top Chef Tour. Blogger the Arriviste has written a fun post on the event.
And congratulations to Mike Isabella, who was recently named Chef of the Year by DC Magazine!

Top Chef Texas winner Paul Qui will be appearing in the first episode of the new season of USA Network's Royal Pains. Let's hope the cameras don't lure him away from the kitchen!
Bethesda Magazine has a nice feature on Bryan Voltaggio and his latest restaurant concept. He's becoming quite the Maryland restaurant mogul.
Remember Stone, Chef Tyler Stone? No? Well, he was on Top Chef Texas for about ten minutes and suddenly he's "Chef Tyler Stone from Bravo's Top Chef." Really.
More "really" - Miami Chef Lorena Garcia, who appeared on "America's Next Great Restaurant" (giant fail) and will be on the upcoming season of Top Chef Masters, has helped Taco Bell design a new, upscale menu. Say goodbye to those nasty mystery meat tacos, America!

What's up with Padma, and why has she shaved her daughter's head and dressed her up like Michael Jackson?
The excitement is building in Atlanta, where Top Chef All-Star champ Richard Blais is opening yet another restaurant on May 26th. Unlike the fast casual concept of his last restaurant, Flip Burger, The Spence is more of an American-style brasserie. We wished we lived in Atlanta, and if you do and plan on eating at The Spence in the near future, we'd love to hear about your experience!

Top Chef: In, Out, at the Super Bowl. and Finale News
Lindsay Autry is still standing on Top Chef: Texas. But she and mentor Michelle Bernstein have left the Omphoy in Miami according to reports here and here.
TC: TX Final Fiver's Ed Lee and Paul Qui team up for a cooking class on "Asian Fusion Redined" in DC on March 31.
More on plans from Season 3's Brian Malarkey for world culinary domination - and a possible reality show - here.
Top Chef All-Stars Richard Blais and Antonia LoFaso will compete in a tail-gating challenge at the Super Bowl.
If you love behind-the-scenes insights as much as I do, check out this post from someone who attended the TC block party that aired last week.
Bravo confirmed those rumors we mentioned that the Season Finale filmed in Vancouver, BC. Renowned ski resort Whistler, BC is involved too. When will it air? We're guessing February 29, since another show is airing in Top Chef's traditional Wednesday time slot starting March 7. Somewhere in there, we're anticipating the Last Chance Kitchen winner will be reintroduced into the mix. And there's a reunion show. How will it play out? Watch what happens :)

A Message from Top Chef Richard Blais
On November 6, I will be running in the world-renowned ING NYC Marathon to support the Alliance for a Healthier Generation in efforts to address one of the nation’s leading public health threats—childhood obesity. I will be leading a team of five first-time marathoners as a part of “Team Healthier Generation”.Our team has committed to raising $50,000. I would greatly appreciate any contribution your company is able to make that will help me achieve this goal. All donations are tax deductible and will go directly to the Alliance to combat childhood obesity both locally and across the country.
Nearly 1 in 3 kids is already overweight or obese and today’s generation could be the first to liveshorter lives than their parents. By supporting more than 12,000 schools nationwide and impacting the lives of more than seven million students, the Alliance, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, is leading the charge in the fight against the childhood obesity epidemic.
In just a few years, the Alliance has made a tremendous impact in Georgia through its Healthy Schools Program, in which more than 425 of our local schools are participating. The program, which is provided free of charge by the Alliance, leads schools through a step-by-step process to transform their schools into healthier places for students to learn and grow. Seventeen of our schools in Georgia earned National Recognition Awards from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for their work creating healthier environments for students and staff.
To support me in the ING NYC Marathon, please visit my personal fundraising web page at www.crowdrise.com/rblais. You will not only be able to make an online donation here; you will also be able to track my progress and be recognized for your gift. If you prefer, you may mail your support directly to me instead at 866 Monroe Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30308. Payment can be made out to Alliance for a Healthier Generation (memo field: Blais). Please make your contribution by November 6 so that it may be counted toward my goal.
If you would like more information on the Alliance or on how you may support me and “Team Healthier Generation” in the ING NYC Marathon through a local event or sponsorship, please feel free to contact me directly at 404.704.7497.
By supporting the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, YOU become a part of the solution in the fight against the childhood obesity epidemic. Together, we can end childhood obesity and empower kids nationwide to live healthier lives.
Thank you, in advance, for joining me in supporting this very important cause.
Sincerely,
Richard Blais

TC News and Information 9.19.11
Stephanie Izard is on a mission to raise $500,000 for Share Our Strength, and one facet of that effort is a national tour – cooking with local chefs and promoting her upcoming cookbook, Girl in the Kitchen. Eater has coverage here. More on the Goat Tour website – and whether she’ll be coming to your town – here.
Steph will also be in charge of creating the menu to feed this year’s CMT Artists of the Year nominees, according the press release here.
In a similar gig, TC Masters contestant Tim Love was the chef behind the performers’ food at last week’s Austin City Limits Festival. Check out what he has to say here about cooking on that scale since he started doing it in 2009.
Michael Voltaggio’s Ink. is now set to open this Wednesday in LA, and brother Bryan hosts a benefit for Share Our Strength at his Baltimore restaurant Volt September 27.
Another long-anticipated venture, Richard Blais’s haute hot dog restaurant, HD1, is opening Thursday, reports Eater Atlanta.
Fabio Viviani tells Grub Street he’s done building Bravo’s legacy for free and instead building his own. You can read what all up to, in inimitable Fabio fashion here. (P.S., since it seems to be a topic of endless fascination, he says he has a girlfriend.)
Author and frequent TC judge Anthony Bourdain gets his own imprint (that’s publishing-speak for “line of books”), for which he will act as talent scout to acquire three to five books a year written by other authors that “reflect his remarkably eclectic tastes,” according to this item from the NY Times.
And the Emmy went to - Amazing Race. Despite Top Chef's upset last year, the best competition-reality award is back in the hands of the long-time winner in the category.
Need something to sweeten the blow? As you look forward to Wednesday's episode of Just Desserts, you can brush up on some of those terms they throw around on the show with this handy translation guide.

TC News and Information 9.12.11
This week’s Willy Wonka episode of Just Desserts rated inclusion by producers The Magical Elves in their top 10 list of favorite episodes of all the shows they’ve produced, saying it “may be the ultimate episode of Just Desserts. . . ." Click through the slide show for the 9 others, many of which I’m sure our readers will recall.
Have you been reading Just Desserts Season 1 winner Yigit Pura’s Bravo blog about this season? You can also find him “half-naked and sugar-coated,” Yigit says, in a calendar for Meals on Wheels, one of his favorite charities. You can glimpse him in the right-hand sidebar, or purchase one, here.
Were you as glad as I was to see TC Masters contestant Hugh Acheson as guest judge on last week’s episode? He’ll be back as one of the judges on TC9: Texas with Emeril Lagasse, reports Entertainment Weekly.
Frequent TC judge Eric Ripert’s Le Bernadin recently reopened and Feast has before, during, and after videos about the restaurant’s renovation. Meanwhile, Ripert protégé and TC All-Star Jen Carroll has announced she is leaving Ripert’s 10 Arts restaurant in Philly, according to Grub Street.
Three Top Chef chefs make the New York Times list of this fall’s most hotly anticipated restaurants: Masters 3 winner Floyd Cardoz’s North End Grill, Season 3 winner Hung Huynh’s Catch, and All Star contestant Dale Talde’s Talde.
Those Voltaggio brothers are busy too. They have a new cookbook coming out, and Michael’s long-promised LA restaurant Ink. (reported here to be opening in late September) has been upstaged by his new sandwich shop, Ink.Sack, which opened recently a few doors down. LA Weekly’s Jonathan Gold reports here. Yum Sugar has a great video interview with Michael Voltaggio here about his numerous new ventures.
All-Stars winner Richard Blais tells Eater his wife came up for the name of his next restaurant, The Spence, slated to open in winter 2012. He’s also a finalist for Restaurateur of the Year from the Georgia Restaurant Association. Winners will be announced in November.
All-Star Casey Thompson has teamed up with Sam’s Club and is eyeing new opportunities in Napa, according to this interview with Eater. Dale Levitski has been enlisted by Sam’s Club too.
Here's a report of Season 4 of Top Chef Masters filming in Vegas (scroll down to the second paragraph under The Scene and Heard).
Finally, if you’ve ever dreamed of being on Top Chef, you have something in common with Marge Simpson, reports Zap2It. Tom Colicchio will appear in animated form on The Simpsons season premiere on FOX September 25. Is it just me, or does this rendering look more like Hosea Rosenberg?

Congratulations to Top Chef for garnering four Emmy nominations (“Outstanding Reality-Competition Program,” “Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Programming,” “Outstanding Directing for Non-Fiction Programming” and “Outstanding Picture Editing for Reality Programming”)! No Reservations, the Travel Channel show starring frequent TC judge Anthony Bourdain, also received four nominations (“Outstanding Nonfiction Series,” “Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming,” “Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming” and “Outstanding Cinamatography for Nonfiction Programming”).
In case you missed it, here’s a 30-minute video of Bourdain answering the top 10 questions posed by viewers on Reddit.
Want to meet Fabio Viviani? Bertolli olive oil is sponsoring a contest where the winner will win a trip for two to LA for cooking lessons with the maestro.
Ruth Reichl confirms here that Top Chef Masters 4 is in the works.
Jen Carroll, Spike Mendelsohn, Kevin Sbraga, Dale Talde, Carla Hall and Stephen Asprinio were among the Top Chef alums who showed up for an “oven-warming” party at All-Stars finalist Mike Isabella’s newly opened Graffiato. Check out pics and more on Eater.
A couple of interesting pieces about TC Masters 3 finalist Traci des Jardins here and here. She is also blogging for the new Huffington Post San Francisco edition. Here inaugural post here.
And Harold Dieterle, Fabio Viviani and Richard Blais will each take over the kitchen at Wisconsin’s Lake of the Torches Resort Casino selected Thursdays in August.

TC News and Information 6.27.11
I'm back from vacation, and our Top Chef contestants have been all kinds of busy!
Tre Wilcox's Marquee Grill has opened in Dallas, and you can drool over some fabulous photos of Tre's offerings here.
Mike Isabella opened his Jersey/Italian restaurant, Graffiato, last week, which will serve pizzas, pastas, charcuterie, and that pepperoni sauce from Top-Chef All-Stars that made Gail Simmons swoon. Photos from Eater DC here; menus and more from the Washington Post here.
Isabella is also working on a cookbook about New Jersey Italian food, with his wife honcho-ing the test kitchen and blogger Carol Blymire as writer. Blymire is an entertaining writer known for cooking her way through cookbooks by Thomas Keller, French Laundry at Home, and Grant Achatz, Alinea at Home, as well as some well played April Fool's jokes. But this is apparently the real deal.
Season 1’s Tiffani Faison has announced plans to open a new BBQ restaurant in Boston called “Sweet Cheeks” and is touring the South for inspiration.
All-Stars winner Richard Blais has all kinds of culinary irons in the fires, including expanding his Flip Burger Boutique chain to DC and Miami, opening a gourmet hot dog restaurant, HD or Haute Doggery, in Atlanta, and a yet-to-be-named restaurant in midtown Atlanta featuring “simple American food that tastes great.”
Another All-Stars contender, Dale Talde, will be head chef at a “New Asian” restaurant in Brooklyn’s Park Slope that hopes to open by September.
Season 3 winner Hung Huynh is slated to help open a Manhattan “seafood restaurant and lounge” called Catch.
Bryan Voltaggio is working on opening two new restaurants, in Frederick, Maryland, and Chevy Chase Plaza, as well as collaborating on a cookbook with brother Michael. His Frederick restaurant, tentatively called North Market Kitchen, is inspired by Mario Batali’s Eataly in NYC, or maybe not.
And don’t miss this fascinating piece from Ruth Reichl about her experience as judge on Top Chef Masters, from her new desk at Gilt Taste, about why she was surprised a woman didn't win and still loves Floyd Cardoz's food.

TC News and Information 4.20.11
All-Star contestant Spike Mendelsohn will be back on the small screen in October, competing on the next "Next Iron Chef." And he'll be going up against TC Masters 2 winner Marcus Samuelsson and two-time TC Masters contestant Michael Chiarello. Odds, anyone? Grub Street has the full cast lineup.
Not to be outdone, All-Star Fan Favorite Carla Hall will be joining the "The Chew," a daytime talk show devoted to "food from EVERY angle," says the press release. Carla will be part of a "rotating cast" of hosts that includes former Iron Chef Mario Batali, current Iron Chef Michael Symon, "entertaining expert" Clinton Kelly (TLC's "What Not to Wear"), and "nutrition expert" Daphne Oz (who apparently is related to Dr. Oz, also of daytime talk show fame). Eater is all over this story, with the full press release, news of the ire it has inspired in fans of "All My Children" (the daytime soap that will go off the air in September to make room for "The Chew"), Mario Batali's response to the soap backlash, and best of all, a photoshopped image of The View, er, Chew's foodie cast.
Season 4 TC winner Stephanie Izard keeps racking up so many awards it's almost hard to keep track of them. She somehow managed to find time in her crazy schedule to write a blog post about the thrill of being named one of Food + Wine's 10 Best New Chefs of 2011, and it's a a sweet and funny read.
All-Star winner Richard Blais is everywhere these days too. Check out this piece from Yumsugar, where he says he's opening "several restaurants in the Southeast" and confirms he will be part of this year's Top Chef Tour.
The TC Tour got underway last week in St. Louis, and Bravo's website is continuing to add and change details as plans firm up. Click here for the latest and to see if they'll be stopping near you. Season 6's Hector Santiago (who talks about the Tour here) competed against Season 4's Nikki Cascone at the St. Louis stop, which current Masters contestant Celina Tio judged, according to her facebook page.
For an even more impressive Top Chef Midwestern meal (sadly for the rest of us, not part of the Tour), check out this post from blogger Big Shamu at The Karmic Kitchen, who was fortunate enough to taste a six-course meal prepared by Carla Hall and Antonio LoFaso in Kansas City, appropriately dubbed "Girl Power."
In light of the events of last week's Top Chef Masters, here's an interesting piece the LA Times that ran just before that episode aired. Of John Rivera Sedlar (who disappeared from Episode 2 with little fanfare - hence, the return of Hugh Acheson), the LAT says: "As will be seen in an upcoming episode, Sedlar was opening his new restaurant, Playa, at the start of the five-week Top Chef Masters shoot. 'I had everybody working double-time,' Sedlar said. When he saw how the restaurant's marketing campaign was unfolding without his guidance, 'my blood was starting to boil' but he couldn't leave the show to deal with it. That's when he considered fleeing to France." The article also says that Mary Sue Milliken, "clearly a bit more unflappable, decided to leave her restaurants in [business partner and former TCM contestant Susan] Feniger's hands and even moved into the Top Chef Masters contestants' hotel for much of the production, hence her description of it as the 'evil vacation.'" Future episode reveals? A sequesterville hotel? Hmm.
A tip of the hat to my co-blogger here, Minx, who has deduced that this season of Top Chef Masters will conclude June 15, when Rocco DiSpirito's "Dinner Party" prepares to take over the coveted Wednesday night timeslot on Bravo.
And finally, are you as charmed by Suvir Saran as I am? Love his dry wit. Here's a cute piece - and cuter photo - of him. He doesn't seem to be doing a lot of appearances, but if you're near Silicon Valley, you can catch him at the Dining Out for Life fundraiser April 28-29.
